Le Festival de la Francophonie
The Festival de la Francophonie is about connecting people, sharing ideas, and solving global challenges, all while celebrating the richness of French-speaking cultures!
La Francophonie is a vibrant global community of French speakers—whether it’s as a first or second language. The Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) unites 88 countries with over 1.2 billion people, including 300 million French speakers, celebrating cultural diversity, education, human rights, and peace.
But it’s not just about language, it is also about music, literature, cinema, and collaboration on trade and infrastructure.

Remember that you can check all the details in our Agenda and have it organized by month on our Calendar!

In March, the D.C. Francophonie Cultural Festival celebrates the diversity and richness of the French language and Francophone communities through a series of cultural events and outreach programs.
Since 2001, more than 40 embassies and partners (including the Alliance Française de Washington DC and the Smithsonian Associates) have collaborated each year to present an array of experiences all rooted in the Francophone culture — from Africa, to the Americas, to the Middle East — through concerts, cuisine, films, literary salons, and lectures for all ages.

Did You Know? The Krewe of Rex
The Krewe of Rex is the social club (or "krewe") that organizes one of the biggest and most famous Mardi Gras parades in New Orleans.
Known as "The King of Carnival" the parade showcases spectacular floats, masked riders, and plenty of bead-throwing.
The Mardi Gras colors—purple, green, and gold—each have a specific meaning.
The colors were chosen in 1872 by the Krewe in honor of visiting Russian Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich of Russia, who visited New Orleans in 1872. Purple stands for justice, green represents faith, and gold symbolizes power.
From Epiphany to Mardi Gras
The King Cake’s origins go way back to medieval Europe, where it was baked for Epiphany as the Galette des Rois to celebrate the Three Kings’ visit to baby Jesus. Inside was a hidden bean or coin, and the lucky finder was crowned “King” or had to host the next party.
Fast forward to New Orleans, where the King Cake evolved into a Mardi Gras tradition. Starting on Twelfth Night (January 6) and lasting until Fat Tuesday, the day before Lent begins.
So don’t miss enjoying this purple, green and gold cake on Tuesday March 4th because after that, you’ll have to wait until April 20th, 2025, when Lent ends, for your next sweet indulgence!

Les Expressions Françaises
Bouillon de Culture
culture medium
The term "Bouillon de Culture" originally comes from biology, where a culture broth is a liquid used to grow microbes.
Playing on the word "culture," the expression has evolved to describe an environment teeming with ideas and creativity.
In the 90s, "Bouillon de Culture" was a popular weekly TV show hosted by Bernard Pivot, running for a decade. For one hour each week, Pivot interviewed guests, primarily on cultural topics, with a special focus on literature.
March is truly a "Bouillon of French Culture," full of vibrant events, conversations, and celebrations of all things French.
