Les Expressions Françaises
"Avoir la dalle"
Being hungry
The French expression “avoir la dalle” (literally, to have the gutter) is slang for being very hungry and is still widely used. The term la dalle has a practical origin, it referred to a gutter, and in cities like Nantes and Le Havre, you’ll still find dalle nantaise and dalle havraise, drainage systems that manage rooftop runoff at property lines. The word dalle itself comes from the Old Norse daela, meaning…gutter.
From the gutter it became a colloquial metaphor for the throat and the phrase was first used as a way to describe drinking heavily, then just wanting a drink, and eventually, just plain being hungry.
Just so you know, come to the Bastille Day event, especially if "vous avez la dalle", there will be plenty of food ready for you!
