Les Expressions Françaises
"Ça se bouscule au portillon"
"Crowding at the gate"
The expression dates from the early days of the Parisian metro.
Up to the 60’s access to the metro platforms was through a gate which was blocked by a man who punched your ticket when the train arrived on the platform. The gates did not open when the train arrived at the station; on the contrary, they closed... which created havoc.
So, even if they had a first class ticket (which existed in the Parisian metro all the way to the 90’s) when they heard the train coming, people would run to the gate causing a frantic rush up the stairs or the corridors.
Since then the expression is used wherever there is a crowd pushing to gain access somewhere.
Today if your thought process seems to be running wild, you might be told to quiet down because "ça se bouscule au portillon".
