Cinema’s birth: a French-American odyssey!
Before the Cinématographe, Thomas Edison had developed the Kinetograph.
The Kinetograph was a camera used to take a series of pictures in motion, and to view them he developed the Kinetoscope, a viewer that allowed just one person to see through a peephole the motion picture!
The Kinetoscope did not have a projector so Louis Lumière and his brother Auguste worked together to create the Cinématographe that could not only record moving images, but also projected them on a screen.
The Cinématographe was light weight enough to be transported. They filed their patent in 1895, which is considered the date of the birth of Cinema.
Les Expressions Françaises
"Faire tout un cinéma"
Or as Shakespeare would say:
Much Ado about Nothing
This expression dates back...obviously from no earlier than the 20th century.
In the early days of motion pictures, when there was no sound, actors had to exaggerate their movements and expressions to let the viewer better understand the plot of the story. This led to to over-representation, and exaggeration.
"Faire tout un cinéma" has a corresponding expression: when one gets annoyed with all this exaggeration you might hear a loud injunction "Arrête ton cinéma!"
