La Pétanque et le Cochonnet
Yes, we do have a Club de Pétanque in Washington DC!
Pétanque is a sport where individuals or teams throw their Boules towards a smaller target ball, the Jack, or Cochonnet. You aim or point (’tu Tires ou tu Pointes!’) your Boule to get as close to the target as possible.
But more than that, the main goal is to meet other people and develop friendships.
Games of Boules have been recorded since the time of the Gaulois. These games were very popular in the Middle Ages, such as the Jeu de Paume played in the royal courts of France, and which is considered precursor of tennis, although it was played without a racket. Petanque is one of these traditional Boules games.
The name of the cochonnet can be traced to these old games as well. Rabelais in his book Gargantua (1534) talks about playing bowling, trinkets and "J’oüer au cochonnet", ou "au cochonnet va-devant”.
As the Washington Pétanque Club indicates: “Pétanque is a social game. Our club is about the people who play and the friendships that are made on the courts.”
If you live in the Washington DC metro area you can go and play every Saturday from 1:30 PM until the last players leave around 4:00 PM and Wednesday afternoons starting at 1:30 pm at Virginia Highlands Park in Arlington, VA. They have a potluck picnic from noon to about 2 p.m. once a month.
The Club has loaner boules and instructions for beginners. If you want to become an expert you can find official instructions on how to play the game (in French) at the Federation Internationale de Petanque!
